Pousada History

Sao Bras de Alportel Pousada was built in the forties and launched by the national secretary of marketing, Dr. Antonio Ferro. Sao Bras de Alportel Pousada is without a doubt in a privileged location from where one can get to know Algarve.

Designed by the Architect Miguel Jacobetty, Sao Bras de Alportel Pousada was one of the first seven Pousadas to be launched in Portugal. The Pousada started with 5 rooms, then expanded to 14 rooms and, in 1997, augmented to 33.

Sao Bras de Alportel Pousada is the spot where days drift by with serenity, nested in the beautiful earthwarm tones of the country and complemented by the deep blue in the horizon (Ria Formosa).

History of S. Brás de Alportel

Sao Bras de Alportel county is the youngest of the Algarve located in the center of the Algarve between the hills and the sea. Sao Bras de Alportel is near Tavira, Loule, Faro and Olhao. It is constituted by just one parish and has 40 different localities in its territory.

Weather wise, Sao Bras de Alportel's closeness to the Caldeirao and Barrocal mountains provide the ideal weather conditions to spend an holiday in Algarve. Because it offers one of the best micro-climates, in 1918, a very important health facility for the hart, "Sanatorio Carlos Vasconcelos" was erected.

The Cork Industry is one of the popular symbols in this area dating back to the 19th century. Its high percentage (60%) of the national cork production made this region of extremely important for the national cork industry.

As far as regional events, the Mountain Fear must not be missed. It is held every year at S. Bras de Alportel, and it is a celebration of colors flavors and traditional art lasting for 3 days.

Also worth mentioning is the Algarve’s Costume Museum, the local church and the beautiful "Verbena" garden, with its municipal swimming-pools.
